Human Submitted: "Beau" a Poem by Jimmy Stewart

"Beau"
by Jimmy Stewart

He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn't come at all.

When he was young
He never learned to heel
Or sit or stay,
He did things his way.

Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn't drag.
He'd dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I'd grab him, he'd turn and bite me.

He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favorite prey.
The gas man wouldn't read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.

He set the house on fire
But the story's long to tell.
Suffice it to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.

On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
Because our bones were sore.

He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.

But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the Old One was there
And would follow him where he was bound.

We are early-to-bedders at our house--
I guess I'm the first to retire.
And as I'd leave the room he'd look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.

He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I'd give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I'd fish it out with a smile.

And before very long
He'd tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner
In no time at all.

And there were nights when I'd feel him
Climb upon our bed
And lie between us,
And I'd pat his head.

And there were nights when I'd feel this stare
And I'd wake up and he'd be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I'd feel him sigh
and I think I know the reason why.

He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he'd be glad to have me near.

And now he's dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
And I pat his head.

And there are nights when I think
I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
But he's not there.

Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,
I'll always love a dog named Beau.

ALONE AGAIN

I wish someone would tell me what it is
That I have done wrong
Why I have to stay chained up
Left alone so long

They seemed so glad to have me
When I came here as a pup.
There were so many things we'd do
While I was growing up.

They couldn't wait to train me as a
Companion and a friend.
And told me how they'd never fear
Being left alone again.

The children said they'd feed me and
Brush me every day.
They'd play with me and walk me
If only I could stay.

But now the family "Hasn't Tine",
They often say I shed.
They don't even want me in the house
Not even to be fed.

The children never walk me.
They always say "Not now!"
I wish that I could please them
Won't someone tell me how?

All I had, you see, was love
I wish they would explain
Why they said they wanted me
Then left me on a chain?

The Creation Story.

On the first day of creation God created the dog
On the second day, God created man to serve the dog
On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth (especially the horse) to serve as potential food for the dog.
On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labor for the good of the dog.
On the fifth day, God created the tennis ball so that the dog might or might not retrieve it.
On the sixth day, God created veterinarian science to keep the dog healthy and the man broke.

On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but he had to walk the dog.

This Notary Security Dog Alert is dedicated to my cousin, Chipper Page. Chipper is a dog who has taught the rest of us that if you learn to say "Woo woo!"on command much rejoicing comes from the humans and they give you snacks and foody treats.

Chipper is an American Cocker Spaniel. And, from this Notary Security Dog's pawspective, I don't know how Chipper manages to patrol her inner territory without suffering from over-floppitism and drama-droption. (Drama-droption and over-floppitism are both ill health syndromes that Notary Security Dogs AND their families can suffer from.)

I suppose that the reason she manages is that she is not as burdened with responsibility as I am since I am not only a security bearing animal, but also one of elevated status in that I am a Notary Security Dog.

Though I am a very powerful and savvy dog, not to mention, one of the top Notary Dogs in America, I was frightened so badly by the size of Chipper's territorial boundaries that I literally got sick when I visited her at the human holiday commonly known as Thanksgifting and the Feasting by Humans. (By the way, Thanksgifting is a holiday humans celebrate because they are so very thankful for their dogs. Dogs get a lot of foody gifts on Thanksgifting following the human feasting.)

Chipper's territory is not only long and wide, it also goes from the ground almost to the sky where rain comes from. The highest point in my home is hardly much larger than regulated territory dogglesize...Chipper's inner territory is large and fully dogdom-manimous with so many large caves I cannot keep count.

And, there are lots of starcases. A starcase is a running and climbing area for star dogs like me and Chipper. We show off on them, and we also let the humans use them to get to their sleeping caves. Be careful, though, because all human sleeping caves in Chipper's territorial home also have a "badroom" attached.

The badroom is a place where humans usually show how insane, or plain stupid they are by what they do to their dogs in those badrooms. (Stupid or insane humans are what we live for though! They need us.)

Anyhow, the insane or stupid human puts a dog into nasty smelling perfumed water for a "Bad." Then afterwards, the insanity of the female human shows when she shreiks as a dog shakes off all the perfumed water, and runs past her, and out the door, and down the starcase.

But, I digress...back to Chipper's territory...Usually, one of the humans tell the dogs when it is time to show off their star-dogdom stuff. Other times, the stupid humans forget about the stardom of dog stars and use the starcases. They mount and climb them without the dogs for casual visits to the sleeping cave.

One way the starcase is used for the good of dogs is like on Thanksgifting, after the Feast of Humans.

Aunt Debbie will stand at the bottom of the starcase, and start clapping and telling me and Chipper to "Run, run, run...hurry, hurry...faster!!!" It's fun for a little while, but Chip, nor I, can ever get Aunt Debbie to do her part on the starcase.

The starcases in Chipper's territory are massive and dogdoubled and a dog can get nearly all the way to the clouds by using them. They fork at one point and a dog has to make a quick choice.

I got dizzy from all the climbing. The problem for me when I am visiting Chipper, is that you can see the floor from both sides of the starcases in Chipper's inner territory. (The starcases are built with openness especially so the star dogs can be seen from all angles by humans while they perform.)

As a result of the open visual aspects, while on the top part of the pawtrecherous starcases I realized I might fall out of the side of the them and it scared me so bad that my mom had to carry me up highest starcase when it was time for us to go into our cave at night.

But moreso, my head spun from making decisions at the top of the lowest starcase. If it were time for humans to go into their caves to sleep, you see, a dog like me prances up a starcase ahead of it's master to see if it's safe to let the human go into the sleeping cave.

However, brave Chipper's territory requires that you make a decision on which starcase you take next once you get to the top of the first one. The best of dogs get flustered because you don't know if you need to double back or just what is expected of you.

Where the starcase forks, a good NSD knows that have to stop and make a decision. I never know if I should just go back down to the ground territory, or take the rightpaw starcase or the leftpaw starcase.

If you go leftpaw in Chipper's territory you will see there is a sleeping cave, a badroom, and a large cave with something in it the humans call a pool table. (Now, about that pool table cave, I have yet to see any water in that room so I am not sure that the humans know what they are yelping about on that one.)

Anyhow, the night after Thanksgifting I was so full of drama-droption I lost my foody gifts all over my human while she was sleeping.

But, the next morning, Chipper was ready to do a full "WOO WOOOOOO! upon request, and thus more snacks were showered on both of us as a result. THANK YOU CHIPPER! I hope you have a doggle-dandy new year. See you as soon as your humans fix those skyscratching starcases.

Best wishes for a pawperous New Year to you All...

Teaching the Human "Vigilance"

Notary Security Dog Alerts
Teaching the Human "Vigilance"
by Ally - Texas, NSD CIP

Greetings to the overworked Notary Security Dog Population at Large:

Today, I think I finally taught my human female something worthwhile. Packs of you will know exactly where this Notary Security Dog (NSD) is "growling" from!

All this time, my human thought the reason I sit and watch her so intently is because I want attention or food. Hardly so! (But, heh, heh...humorous growl...I do not mind the attention benefits derived therefrom!)

By example, I am currently teaching my human the importance of attentive vigilance on one's master.

She's my master, and I am her humble servant. I have little on my mind except what she's doing because I know all good things that come to me come from my human. She's my master. And, she's the one who is truly on MY side.

Oh sure, I like other people. Take for instance, the owners of my little buddy, Gretta Bean. Her house is across the street. Her masters don't love me like my own master loves me. They are nice, but they don't seem to understand that the world actually does revolve around me. They get all hung up on Gretta. It makes me jealous, but I have to tell you, sometimes they bring me toys and treats they procure and bring home wrapped up in certain form of dog amusement called the "Blue Wal-Mart Shopping Bag."

And, I have to admit, I LIKE what's inside of a Blue Wal-Mart Shopping Bag.

I learned about this form of pup pleasure from that highhanded little German Gretta gal I have mentioned above.

Dog Readers...Might I digress momentarily to tell you about Gretta?

About Gretta Bean Barber...

Gretta Bean is a Miniature Dachshund. (Weiner Dog, heh heh!) She has two humans. One is a male realtor and the other is a female TAMU pre-med student.

The interesting thing to note about Gretta is her enjoyment of hunting. Even as small as she is, she hunts the plentiful Blue Wal-Mart Shopping Bag. Any size. Once the same is within her reach, she grips it in her jaw and kills it DEAD.

Following the kill, she engages the ancient dog ceremony of wearing her kill briefly as a headdress. This means she runs ritualistically through her territorial home with the Blue Wal-Mart Shopping Bag on her head..

Finally, she does what dogs call a "Tennesse Overkill Manuever." (That is, she "kills" the bag again.) At this point, she is a frenzied destroyer and a sight to behold.

At the end of this, a feral instinct cuts on my friend and she deftly guts the bag removing all of the doggie treats inside.

I, on the other hand, am not a thrill-seeking killer of the Blue Wal-Mart Shopping Bag. I will not kill such a bag because my own human uses them in the collection of household garbage, and I have also noted she uses them to put my food in to take to my human grandmother's house on overnight trips. My large jaws would shred such a bag, so I sit impatiently tapping my tail until my human performs the bag gutting for me. That way, she is able to utilize the dead bag for another purpose.

Okay, back to teaching a human the tributes of vigilance through demonstration:

When I am vigilant to keep my dog eyes and ears attuned to my human master, I get good things. I miss nothing that her subtle activities communicate to me. If I get side-tracked, like dogs are prone to do, I might miss the refrigerator door opening, or the covert hint of my master putting on her shoes whereupon I can act "cute" and get an extra walk down the road before she gets involved in something else.

If I were not vigilant, I would not hear my human sing my praises to Aunt Debbie when she's talking to her on the telephone. Hence, I would miss the serotonin-boosting moment of celebratory tail-wagging and knowing how wonderful my human believes me to be.

Or, I might not hear the 5:00 pm call come in from my human sibling (an adult male) signalling his return from the dreadful distant place known as "Work." Without my vigilance attuned to my human master's activities, I would miss an opportunity, to go sit at my window excitedly waiting to bark in the sibling's black truck's approach. As you know, Good NSDs bark the return of a beloved human and greet them upon approach to the territorial home!

If only my human would only keep her heart focused on the activities of her Master, think of all the blessings and good things that she would see in her life. Subtle things are easily missed.

As I have demonstrated to my human, the art of vigilance on her own Master's activities will increase her faith in her Master's providence. She might miss some of the good things He is more than willing to send her way if she not watchful and attuned to the nuances of His activities in her life.

Until next time: Wag your own tail! Bark joyously and live vigorously!
